Credit refusal interactive guide

This step-by-step interactive guide aims to help you find out why the lender refused to give you credit and what you can do next. For example, you might be able to challenge the lender’s decision, or you might find out something you can do to improve your chances for next time.

Don’t apply for credit again until you’ve got the facts. Making repeated credit applications can damage your credit score and make things worse.

Most lenders use three sources of information to help them decide which customers to lend to: your application form, your credit report, and any information they have about you already. They will often use an automated process known as credit scoring to objectively assess this information.

When refusing credit, the lender will usually tell you that they have checked your credit report with one or more credit reference agencies and give you their contact details. Importantly, this does not mean that the information on your credit report caused them to say no – unless they tell you this specifically.

So let’s begin.
