60 Second Interview with...

Laura McFarlane, Head of Model Risk Development, TSB

1. In your opinion, why do you think representation should be more championed in the industry?

A: Representation of every group should be championed; particularly for groups that continue to be underrepresented in our industry. We must continue to close gaps until such time that we've got balanced representation, equal opportunities, and rewards.

2. What advice would you give to the next generation of women in the industry?

A: Do the work you enjoy, seek out the exciting projects and surround yourself with people who inspire you - this will keep you motivated and passionate about your development. It's a great industry to work in, full of opportunities for all.

3. In your opinion or experience, please name 1-2 things that can be done by a) individuals b) companies and/or c) society to support the elevation of women in senior positions in the industry?

A:

A.) Individuals can support the elevation of women in senior positions by: educating themselves on the statistics, understanding how their company compares to the industry in terms of senior appointments, and taking action where a gap exists. The type of action can vary depending on spans of control of the individual however everyone can get involved; by lending their voice to the topic, being interested, asking questions, being conscious of any subconscious bias one may have when it comes to assigning project work/ recruitment / extent of training and coaching on offer, and being accommodating for flexible working arrangements/ additional measures that may help women succeed.

B.) Companies can support the elevation of women in senior positions by: having effective policies in place with respect to flexible working/ parental leave/ carers/ pay, leading by example with board structure (50% women), setting and monitoring targets as part of strategic plans – and proactively addressing any imbalance.

4. What does allyship mean to you and what advice would you give to those who want to be allies in their industry?

A: Allyship provides a safe platform to explore topics that can otherwise have negative connotations; it doesn't feel comfortable or right that women are underrepresented in this industry, or that women can be paid less than men for doing the same job, or that the large majority of executives continue to be male. First step to understanding an issue is shining a light on it, agreeing it is indeed an issue, and then taking corrective action. Events such as the WIC conference and WIC awards celebrate allyship and my advice is to get involved, be curious and collectively we can make a difference.
