60 Second Interview with...

Seeta Halder, Head of Credit Risk Data & Analytics / Chair of D&I, PCF Bank

1. In your opinion, why do you think representation should be more championed in the industry?

A: There is still much unconscious bias and under represented groups being overlooked within the industry. We need to break down the barriers of promoting and hiring people that are ‘like me’ and champion the success of diverse teams.

2. What advice would you give to the next generation of women in the industry?

A: Don’t conform, be the change you want to see. Challenge and speak out, in the right way, when you see something you are not comfortable with and most of all support other women.

3. In your opinion or experience, please name 1-2 things that can be done by a) individuals b) companies and/or c) society to support the elevation of women in senior positions in the industry?

A:

  1. For individuals, this is allyship. Everyone needs to understand and challenge their weaknesses and/or unconscious bias in this area. Where they feel uncomfortable, they need to talk about it and really listen and accept to female perspectives and lived experiences without challenging or judgement.
  2. For companies, this needs to be led from the very top. It needs to be embedded into the workplace culture and every board member and senior leader reinforcing the culture. Successful companies will be those that are representative of their workforce and customers. Women want to work in places where they can see other women are treated on a level playing field and can achieve. Companies need to foster an environment of psychological safety where everyone is comfortable speaking out.

4. What does allyship mean to you and what advice would you give to those who want to be allies in their industry?

A: An ally will stand up, speak out and challenge when they see unfairness and the imbalance, even if it is to their own cost. Allies are extremely important as the support and  confidence it gives other women is invaluable. There is always strength in numbers. Allies also show that they are willing to learn to help the cause. Anyone wants to be and can be an ally by being who they are. They can talk to other women, learn about lived experiences and challenges faced. They can use what they know and have learned by educating and challenging others who don’t believe there is any gender imbalance or gender pay gap. They can also look to mentor and sponsor females and promote the success of diverse teams.
